How to make a room look expensive on a budget

Use fewer, better things. One clear colour, used again, and one piece or pair worth looking at do more than ten small things. You do not need new furniture.

What does that look like?

After

Both photos show the same sideboard. In the first photo, it holds a row of small things. In the second photo, it holds a pair of Royal Blue vases.

The blue matches the artwork and the cushions. Nothing else in the room is new, but the room looks more put together.

What are the four steps?

Pick one surface, such as a sideboard or a coffee table. Then tick each step as you do it.

  1. Clear one surface. Take everything off it.
  2. Keep three things you love. Put the rest away for now.
  3. Repeat one colour. Pick a colour the room already has.
  4. Add one piece or a pair with height. Two heights give the spot a clear shape.

Then leave some clear space around what you keep. Space helps each thing stand out.

Which piece is worth looking at?

A WINKOO vase is a sculptural piece in one solid colour. It looks good empty, so it does not need flowers.

Most people choose Noma at 24 cm, which costs A$169. A 24 cm Orrin costs the same.

Both shapes cost A$269 at 34 cm, which is the tallest size we make.

Every piece is designed and made in Melbourne in small premium batches.

Should you choose one piece or a pair?

One piece is enough on a small surface. Does it look a bit empty? Then add an 18 cm vase beside the 24 cm vase.

You can find the 18 cm size with our sculptural vases.

Your room doesn't need more. It needs the right piece, or the right pair.

Do you need to buy anything else?

No, you can keep your furniture and your walls as they are. Start with the things you already own and love.

The photo shows one piece with clear space around it. The change is small, and you keep the furniture you have.
